That’s the most Malcolm album you’ll get.” - Josh Berg, lead sound engineer.ġ. “That’s like Mac’s personality, that’s what ‘Faces is. Whatever he was thinking he left his absolute all on this tape. Maybe he thought his freedom was gone now that he's so famous. Maybe he thought music as he loved it was over and now it would be nothing but touring and putting on a fake 'face' for the media.
#DIABLO MAC MILLER SAMPLE MAC#
The point in his career that Mac was in (just signed a major label deal despite saying previously he would never sell out and do so, also just came back from 6+ months of touring and festivals) which almost definitely added to his anxiety. The crypticness of the album's artwork and title and the many many things they could mean. There's just so much to this tape that it's impossible to talk about everything in depth. And although some songs are rough around the edges, and others may feel less important, it doesn’t matter because whatever is on the tape is what was in Mac’s head at the time. But all in all, Faces IS Mac, it IS honesty in its truest form and in a way not many artists can come close to replicating. His attempt to self medicate just keep getting worse and worse and leave him feeling lonelier and further away from reality. The countless bars detailing the emotions he goes through being trapped inside his own head is harrowing as he continues to become desensitised to the drugs he is taking to escape the pain in the first place. There is so much emotion in this tape that it would be impossible to cover everything, it would literally take days to fully interpret the universe he presented us with. He consistently details his relentless struggle in finding himself as a person and fitting into the reality he has built himself as a famous musician. There’s literally a lifetime of truth and emotions in every single song and it’s so captivatingly sad. This is by far the longest I’ve spent to finish an album (spent hours on Genius and writing track by track thoughts, which i added below) due to how damn much Mac fit into these 90 minutes. It was a 90 minute rollercoaster of a journey through the broken mind of Mac Miller in his rawest and most vulnerable state. To sum it up as quickly as possible, it was an EXPLORATION OF TRUTH. 1000% one of the deepest and most meaningful pieces of music I’ve ever heard. What a damn experience and trip that was. One of the most unique and insanely introspective pieces of art ever.
